Alexandria, VA (July 13, 2010) – The Salvation Army will complete the construction of 600 housing shelters through the Transitional Shelter Program in Jacmel, Haiti this week, to assist in relocating earthquake-displaced Haitians back to their home communities. Over the past six months The Salvation Army has transitioned from providing for immediate needs, including temporary shelter, food, water and medical attention to providing long-term recovery services to help return survivors to a level of normalcy in their lives. The long-term rebuilding process has employed more than 400 Haitians as carpenters and construction crew-members to assist in reconstruction efforts.

“The level of care and steps taken to rebuild Haiti has been astonishing, with this transitional housing project highlighting the significant strides everyone has made over the past six months,” said Lt. Colonel Dan Starrett Executive Director of The Salvation Army World Service Office. “Housing shelters have been built in some of the most heavily impacted areas in Haiti, including Jacmel, Bainet, Lilette and Bellami. The Salvation Army has had a major presence in Haiti since the 1950s and we’ll continue to provide earthquake relief services for as long as the need is there.”

Francisco, Franny & Joel complete the Big Sur 5K 2010

On April 25, 2010 two middle school students from our Youth Center Middle School Program participated with Youth Center Director, Franny Huck in the Big Sur 5K. They spent the past two months training and setting goals in preparation for the event.

Congratulations to Francisco, Joel and Franny for completing the race and the hard work they put into training for the event!

Rick is a client of our Good Samaritan Center and admits that he made some mistakes with drugs and alcohol that led to him being homeless. Not anymore though. He’s still homeless, but clean and sober. However, he says it’s not so bad because he at least has a truck to sleep in. “I’m happy.” Coming to the Good Samaritan Center has kept him encouraged and helped him to stay focused on the most important things. For him right now that is finishing school. When he’s done with school he hopes to become licensed and go to work for a firm, design some nice buildings and make a decent living.

In addition to accomplishing his own goals, he’s also helping to inspire others to get back on their feet and get an education in hopes of a good job. “If it inspires someone else, more power to it. Hopefully they’ll see me and say ‘If this guy can do it, I can too’.”

When: Saturday, April 24, 2010. Teams are being recruited for the following shifts:
8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

How you can help: Recruit a team of 12 people (age 10 and older, please) and sign up your team (be sure to let us know the names of the folks you’ve recruited to your team when you sign-up)! If you aren’t able to recruit a team of 12, don’t panic; you can sign-up as an individual. We’ll fit you in to another team and give you a job anyway! We need your help!
